The new appointments will be based in Calgary and Edmonton, and bring the total number of justices of the peace in the province to 43.

Justices of the peace handle a host of matters ranging from provincial offences to criminal law. In Alberta, justices of the peace sit in provincial offences court in Edmonton, Calgary, Medicine Hat, Red Deer, Lethbridge and Grande Prairie, as well as hearing offices in Edmonton and Calgary.

To streamline recruitment for justices of the peace, applications for full-time and part-time positions are accepted on an ongoing basis. Recruitment is underway for a spot in Medicine Hat and various other locations. Qualified lawyers who wish to be considered for appointment can access the application form online.

New justices of the peace

  • Sunita Chowdhury has been appointed as a full-time justice of the peace in Calgary, effective July 4. She received her law degree from the University of Toronto and is currently a lawyer with Mercer Canada Limited.
  • Emanuel Vomberg has been appointed as a full-time justice of the peace in Calgary, effective July 4. He obtained his law degree from the University of Calgary and is currently a Crown prosecutor with the Calgary Rural and Regional Response Office.
  • Denis Lefebvre has been appointed as a full-time justice of the peace in Edmonton, effective July 4. He received his law degree from the University of Alberta and is currently a labour and employment counsel with Alberta Health Services.
  • Maria Gallo has been appointed as a full-time justice of the peace in Edmonton, effective July 12. She obtained her law degree from the University of Alberta and is currently a lawyer with Legal Aid Alberta.
  • Peter Barber has been appointed as a part-time justice of the peace in Edmonton, effective July 12. He obtained his law degree from the University of Alberta and has been a sole practitioner since 2017.
