“Today we reaffirm our stance against homophobic, transphobic and biphobic attitudes and behaviours wherever they exist in Alberta. Such actions and attitudes harm the people they are directed at and our society as a whole. They are attacks on human rights that prevent us from reaching our goal of being a province of diversity and inclusion, and a place where everyone has the opportunity to reach their potential.
“Statistics Canada reports that more than a million people in Canada are lesbian, gay or bisexual and more than 100,000 are transgender or non-binary. These Canadians are almost three times more likely to experience violent victimization than heterosexual or cisgender Canadians. They experience more bullying and discrimination, face less economic security and are more likely to have contemplated suicide.
“In spite of these very real dangers, increasing numbers of courageous young people are finding peace with who they are and choosing to show their authentic selves. Six per cent of Canadians between the ages of 15 and 24 now identify as 2SLGBTQQIA+.
“Today, let's renew our belief in the right of every Albertan to be treated with dignity and respect.”
