“The Holocaust ended on this day in 1945 with the liberation of survivors in the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau.

“The Holocaust took the lives of more than six million European Jews. That’s almost one and a half times Alberta’s entire population. This mass murder was a crime of singular evil in human history. Remembering it is a moral obligation.

“The seeds are here. The Holocaust was rooted in centuries of antisemitism, and that ancient prejudice is still with us. But, if we learn from this painful history we are not doomed to repeat it, making Holocaust education and commemoration essential today.

“Let’s learn from the horror, realize the present danger and rededicate ourselves to a society rooted in the inalienable dignity of the human person.”
