“Today, Albertans of Punjabi heritage celebrate Lohri, a festival marking the end of winter and the coming of spring. Though winter is still upon us in Alberta, we see the promise of spring in our steadily brightening days.

“I know that local Lohri celebrations, even as they adapt to current public health measures, will convey that promise in echoes of Punjabi traditions: bonfires at sunset, prayers for a good harvest and making a symbolic offering of sweets to the bonfire.

“Alberta’s diversity offers a wealth of celebrations to discover and to share, and a wonderful range of perspectives on humanity’s universal joys and hopes. As we learn more about our cultural diversity and find unity in distinctive traditions such as Lohri, we can build a better future for all Albertans.

“My best wishes to all celebrating this joyous festival today. Happy Lohri.”
