“Jewish people in Alberta and around the world are starting their celebration of Chanukah, which centres on the miracle of the menorah.

“More than 2,000 years ago, the Seleucid King Antiochus barred Jews from keeping the Sabbath and desecrated the Temple. The Maccabees fought to reclaim their traditions. During the Temple’s purification, the sacred oil, which was enough to last for only one day, instead burned brightly for eight.

“To commemorate this miracle, a candle is lit today and each day for seven more days. This light represents the indomitable spirit of independence in mankind and the victory of light over dark.

“As Jewish families light the menorah candles this season, I wish them all Chanukah Sameach.”
