“Guru Nanak Gurpurab commemorates the birthday of the first Sikh guru and founder of the Sikh religion, Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Sikhs observe a multi-day celebration in honour of their founder, including reading the Sikh scripture, Guru Granth Sahib, and singing hymns and holding processions.

“Alberta’s government is committed to addressing acts of racism and hatred, and have created a grant program for infrastructure upgrades and training to better protect targeted organizations from vandalism and violence.        

“We can all fight racism by embracing the multiculturalism that makes Alberta a great place to live. I encourage all Albertans to join me in reflecting on the many contributions of our Sikh community and extending best wishes to everyone celebrating Guru Nanak Gurpurab.

“I want to wish members of the Sikh community safe and meaningful celebrations, and hope you find comfort and strength in continuing to practise your traditions.”
