On Tuesday June 11, 2019, at about 9:48 p.m., Edmonton Police Service (EPS) officers observed a stolen Chevrolet Colorado truck. When a marked police vehicle began following the stolen vehicle, it accelerated away. EPS Air 1 was engaged to locate and follow the vehicle, which eventually stopped in the parking lot of an apartment building in the area of 99 Avenue and 106 Street. EPS officers responded and were able to box in the stolen vehicle with police vehicles. The driver of the vehicle was ultimately arrested and taken into custody. During the arrest, the involved officer used force both before and after handcuffs were applied. The charge relates only to uses of force applied after the man was taken into custody and handcuffed.

The evidence gathered during ASIRT’s investigation provided reasonable grounds to believe that an offence had been committed. Following consultation with the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS) and a review of the evidence as a whole, ASIRT executive director Susan Hughson, QC, made the determination that the involved officer should be charged. On Oct. 7, 2021, Cst. Dylan Awid was charged with one count of assault. The officer was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled for first appearance on Nov. 18, 2021 in Edmonton Provincial Court.

As this matter is now before the courts, no further information will be released.

ASIRT’s mandate is to effectively, independently and objectively investigate incidents involving Alberta’s police that have resulted in serious injury or death to any person, as well as serious or sensitive allegations of police misconduct.
