“June 27 is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Awareness Day.

“PTSD is a mental health condition caused by experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Untreated, it can lead to ongoing feelings of anxiety, stress and fear, potentially impacting a person’s ability to function and their overall quality of life.

“Often associated with military personnel or first responders, PTSD can be experienced by anyone involved in a traumatic event. This PTSD Awareness Day, please take time to learn more about the disorder. We all have a role to play in creating awareness and reducing the stigma traditionally attached to mental health.

“If you are experiencing PTSD symptoms or other mental health challenges, help is available. Call the 24-7 Mental Health Helpline at 1-877-303-2642 for support, information and referrals.

“Alberta’s government is also supporting the mental health of first responders through initiatives such as the Supporting Psychological Health in First Responders grant program and funding to the Heroes in Mind, Advocacy and Research Consortium (HiMARC) to develop web-based resources and expand clinical trials using virtual reality to treat PTSD.

“Your mental health is important. While PTSD can be challenging, it is possible to recover from it. Please reach out for support if you need it.”
