On that day at about 5:09 a.m., RCMP received a call reporting a disturbance at a residence in the 5200 block of 35 Street, in Lloydminster. It was reported that an intoxicated adult male was in possession of a machete and was causing a disturbance inside a residence. Two RCMP members responded to the location, and made contact with an adult occupant of the residence through an open window. That occupant and some of the others inside the residence had secured themselves inside a downstairs bedroom of the residence. Police located the 26-year-old man who was the subject of the complaint on the rear deck of the residence and attempted to place him under arrest.

During the officers’ efforts to arrest the man, a physical altercation occurred, and additional police officers were dispatched to the residence. As officers attempted to restrain the man, it was discovered that he had gone into medical distress. Officers attempted to resuscitate the man, and called Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to the residence. Upon arrival, EMS assumed care of the man, but lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

ASIRT’s investigation will examine the conduct of police during this incident, while the RCMP will maintain responsibility for the investigation into the man’s actions. With ASIRT’s investigation underway, no further information will be released at this time.
