On that date at about 3 a.m., EPS attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle that was driving erratically and was reported to have been involved in an incident the previous day. The vehicle failed to stop for police and fled, stopping briefly to allow a passenger to exit before resuming the flight. An EPS vehicle ultimately brought the vehicle to a stop with the use of deliberate contact, at which time the driver, the 19-year-old man, fled on foot.
EPS members from multiple units, including a K-9 unit, pursued the man on foot while the Air 1 helicopter monitored the pursuit. Ultimately, after a short foot pursuit, the man was apprehended. During the struggle to apprehend the man, force was used to take him into custody. After the man was arrested, it was determined that he had sustained an injury. He was taken by ambulance to University of Alberta Hospital, where he was held overnight before being discharged and transferred to the Edmonton Remand Centre (ERC).
ASIRT’s investigation will examine the circumstances surrounding the arrest of the man and the use of force that occurred, while the EPS will maintain responsibility for the investigation of the man and his actions.
As ASIRT’s investigation is underway, no further information will be released at this time.
