“Pongal is a time of celebration, gratitude and togetherness for the Tamil community in Alberta.
“Over the next four days, people of Tamil heritage will honour the gods of sun and rain, thanking them for the harvest. Traditionally, families celebrate by making a sweetened rice dish, also called pongal, which is shared with family and friends.
“The Tamil community has helped create a strong, vibrant Alberta by sharing and celebrating their heritage. We all benefit when we can learn about the beautiful traditions of other cultures and help build a province where all people are welcomed.
