“Today, Albertans of Punjabi heritage celebrate Lohri, a festival marking the end of winter and the coming of spring.

“Traditional celebrations in the Punjab region include lighting a bonfire, which is a symbol of fertility and good luck. This coincides with the harvest of crops, such as sugar cane, and is considered a time of renewal and rebirth.

“At this time of year, we all look forward to brighter days ahead. Learning more about the cultural diversity in our province helps us better understand each other and work together to build a better future for all Albertans.

“My best wishes to Albertans celebrating this joyous festival today. Happy Lohri.”
