“Every person deserves to feel safe and protected. This is at the core of our work to enhance public safety. We know we must do everything we can to protect Albertans and ensure victims and survivors of crime can rely on a justice system that has their back every step of the way.

“If you have been a victim of crime, we encourage you to report it.  If you have been assaulted or you are in a family violence situation, you can apply for an emergency protection order. Our justice system continues to operate during the pandemic.

“To help victims of crime access the help they need when they need it, we established a working group to consult with Albertans and key stakeholders on creating a new victims assistance model to improve the programs and services they need most. In the meantime, victims of serious violent crime and families of homicide victims have access to additional support, such as counselling, help with out-of-pocket expenses and court support. We continue to work with community partners to ensure we have a system that protects and supports victims.

“We all have a role in protecting our communities and the people in them. Albertans have united in many ways to protect and help each other, from the work they do to volunteering with organizations and advocating for victims.

“I am thankful for the many organizations and people across our province who do all they can to help victims and ensure others aren’t victimized. You truly make a difference in the lives of Albertans when they need it most.”
