The project continues to be on budget and on schedule, with construction expected to be complete by the end of 2022.

“This project is creating 476 well-paying construction and construction-related jobs, while improving services for Albertans. Infrastructure projects like the redevelopment at the Misericordia hospital are an integral part of Alberta’s Recovery Plan.”

Prasad Panda, Minister of Infrastructure

“I’m very pleased to see good progress on the Misericordia emergency project. West Edmonton needs a larger, modern emergency department; it is part of our ongoing commitment to strengthen public health care in Alberta.”

Tyler Shandro, Minister of Health

“Covenant Health is grateful to the Government of Alberta for its ongoing support of this important project. We are pleased the redevelopment of the new ED is underway. The enhanced emergency department capacity will ensure we continue to provide high-quality, compassionate care to our patients in a state-of-the-art environment designed to meet their needs and to support our teams to do their best work.”

Patrick Dumelie, CEO, Covenant Health

This $85-million project will include:

  • six ambulance bays
  • emergency waiting and treatment areas
  • a diagnostic services area

The existing emergency department will continue to offer health services and programs until the expanded department opens in 2023.

Safety for patients, staff, visitors and construction workers is the No. 1 priority on this project and all project sites throughout the province. All phases of construction are closely coordinated with hospital staff to ensure public safety and to minimize any impacts on the delivery of services and programs.

Infrastructure projects like the Misericordia Community Hospital emergency department redevelopment are an integral part of the government’s economic recovery strategy to get Albertans back to work.

Alberta’s Recovery Plan is a bold, ambitious long-term strategy to build, diversify, and create tens of thousands of jobs now. By building schools, roads and other core infrastructure, we are benefiting our communities. By diversifying our economy and attracting investment with Canada’s most competitive tax environment, we are putting Alberta on a path for a generation of growth.
