“Each November, Albertans join with their fellow Canadians to recognize Diabetes Awareness Month.

“During this month, we work together to increase awareness of this chronic condition and its impact on the health and well-being of those living with diabetes.

“About one in three Canadians has diabetes or prediabetes and, each day, another 620 Canadians are newly diagnosed with this disease.

“In addition to the daily challenges of managing this disease, it can result in serious long-term complications. Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness and can contribute to stroke, heart attack, kidney failure, nerve damage, as well as leg and foot amputations.

“Diabetes also takes a toll on mental health. About one-third of those with diabetes hesitate to tell others, have no one to talk to about their stress, and experience anxiety and hopelessness.

“I urge all Albertans to support those living with diabetes. Reach out, be compassionate and understanding. Or take action by volunteering your time or contributing to research efforts.

“I also encourage Albertans to learn how to prevent diabetes through diet, exercise and other measures, and to share that information with family and friends.

“Together, we can stop the rise in diabetes.”
