“Tonight marks the beginning of the nine nights of Navaratri, a Hindu festival that honours the Goddess Durga.

“In different regions, traditions vary – some people may celebrate by immersing statues in water, setting off fireworks, or performing a traditional dance called garba. No matter how Navaratri is recognized, all celebrations share the common themes of good defeating evil and the importance of seeking spiritual purification.

“Recognizing holidays from the many cultures and faiths that coexist in Alberta helps celebrate our diversity. These are opportunities to learn more about other cultures, open our eyes to new perspectives, and help build a welcoming home for all people.

“My best wishes to everyone celebrating over the next nine days. May this Navaratri bring you good health and happiness.”
