Judge Aran Veylan was appointed as assistant chief judge for the Edmonton family and youth division. He received his bachelor of arts degree from the University of Alberta in 1972, his master of arts degree from the University of British Columbia in 1976 and his law degree from the University of Alberta in 1980. He was admitted to the bar in 1981 and has been a Provincial Court of Alberta judge since 2012. Prior to becoming a member of the judiciary, he was senior litigation counsel at Cleall Barristers Solicitors in Edmonton.

Judge Sylvia L. Oishi was appointed as assistant chief judge for the southern region. She received her bachelors of science and arts from the University of Alberta in 1982, and her law degree in 1985. She was admitted to the bar in 1986 and has been a Provincial Court of Alberta judge since 2008. Prior to becoming a member of the judiciary, she was a partner with the Jervis Oishi Law Office from 1986 to 1998 and was a Crown prosecutor from 1998 to 2008.

Candidates for the assistant chief judge position are recommended by the Provincial Court of Alberta chief judge to the minister of justice. Assistant chief judges serve five-year terms.
