Master Mattis grew up in southern Alberta and studied at the University of Calgary, where she received a bachelor of commerce degree with distinction in 1993 and was awarded the silver medal in marketing. She earned her bachelor of laws degree from Queen’s University in 1996, and her master of laws in civil litigation and dispute resolution from Osgoode Hall Law School in 2008.
Master Mattis previously practised in Toronto as an associate with a mid-sized litigation firm, and as an associate and partner with Aird & Berlis LLP. She was legal counsel for Toronto-Dominion Bank and the Walton International Group.
She also worked as legal counsel at the Court of Queen’s Bench in Calgary and Court of Appeal of Alberta, as well as privacy counsel for the three Alberta courts. Master Mattis was also an instructor in advanced legal research with the faculty of law at the University of Calgary.

Master in chambers
As an officer of the Court of Queen’s Bench, a master deals with matters regarding civil law, maintenance enforcement, foreclosures, bankruptcy, residential tenancy disputes and builders’ liens.
To be eligible for a master in chambers appointment, candidates must be approved by an interview panel and then be recommended by the Alberta Judicial Council.
Master Mattis starts her new role on Sept. 1.
