On that day at about 1:28 p.m., a member of the Calgary Police Service (CPS) responded to a citizen complaint regarding suspicious activity at a residence on Centre Street N, in northeast Calgary. The caller reported a man behind the residence moving property that the caller believed to be stolen. The caller associated the man and another individual with a black Ford Mustang, and was able to provide CPS with a partial license plate number. When a CPS officer arrived on scene, he encountered two men, both of whom immediately fled: one into the residence, and one on foot down an alley. The officer drove his unmarked CPS vehicle down the alley, where he observed the fleeing man entering the black Mustang. The officer activated his vehicle’s emergency equipment to pull over the vehicle but the Mustang drove off at a high rate of speed. The officer attempted to follow, and announced the flight and the vehicle’s description over the radio. When the Mustang failed to stop, the officer announced over the radio that he was ending his pursuit of the vehicle and pulling over. The officer then radioed the Mustang’s last observed direction of travel.
At 1:31 p.m., CPS received a report of a vehicle that had crashed into a building later identified to be the Tuxedo Park Community Association building at 203 29 Ave NE. The vehicle was confirmed to have been the same black Mustang that had earlier fled the northeast Calgary residence. The lone male occupant of the Mustang was transported to hospital with serious injuries. The man currently remains in hospital.
ASIRT investigators are asking anyone who witnessed this event or who may have information or any video regarding this incident to contact ASIRT investigators at 403-592-4306.
ASIRT’s investigation will focus on whether police conduct caused or contributed to the serious injury of the man, and if so, whether that conduct was lawful. CPS will maintain responsibility for the investigation into the conduct of the man. With ASIRT’s investigation underway, no further information will be released at this time.
