“In the days leading up to the original deadline for this year’s awards, we experienced a surge of nominations. Clearly, Albertans want to recognize the individuals, companies and non-profits who have stepped up to support seniors – especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. I am therefore extending the submission deadline to ensure as many people and organizations as possible are recognized for their contributions throughout the year.”
Countless Albertans are using their time, energy and skills to help our older citizens. Some have been doing it for years, while others stepped up because they know the need is even greater during the pandemic. They all deserve special recognition.
Through the pandemic, Albertans of all ages have been there for seniors. Individuals are checking on an isolated senior, dropping off groceries or mowing the lawn. Organizations and businesses are devising innovative ways to deliver services and supports like virtual classes and special store hours.
For example, one organization was nominated for investing 2,200 volunteer hours to stitch more than 1,000 masks, and a youth group was recognized for collecting donations of handmade cards, crafts, games and more for a seniors lodge.
Albertans are encouraged to nominate a person, organization or business for a Minister’s Seniors Service Award. Nomination forms are available at alberta.ca/MSSA.
