“Our number 1 priority for COVID-19 is limiting the spread of this virus. While the science on COVID-19 continues to grow daily, I am confident that health officials followed the correct approach to protect Albertans in this case.

“As soon as the positive test was confirmed, health officials took immediate steps to contact anyone who may have been exposed and protect the public.

“While the individual had recently travelled to the United States, the doctor saw patients only prior to his being symptomatic. The doctor in question also received a previously scheduled medical procedure at the Misericordia Hospital, again prior to him being symptomatic. We informed Albertans of this on March 11, and he did not see patients while at the hospital.

“Based on the facts available, a team of public health experts determined there was no risk of exposure to the patients. Wanting to be extra careful, we brought an independent expert in infectious diseases to review the case, and they agreed that patients were not at risk.

“I want all Albertans to understand that we’re committed to transparency. AHS immediately contacted anyone believed to be at risk from the virus. We do not contact people who are not at risk. This is the right approach to protect patient confidentiality and avoid alarming Albertans when they are not in danger.

“We are tirelessly working to slow the spread of COVID-19 in Alberta. We err on the side of caution, but are following the best evidence available and the approach being adopted across Canada. We also learn more about this virus every day, and now have clear processes in place to ensure that health professionals and all Albertans self-isolate when returning from outside of Canada.

“We will continue to do everything possible to protect Albertans and limit the spread of COVID-19 in the days ahead.”
