Demolition in full swing to build new emergency department

Minister of Infrastructure Prasad Panda joins Patrick Dumelie, CEO of Covenant Health to swing ceremonial hammers launching demolition at the Misericordia Hospital making way for a new Emergency Department.

The demolition and remediation phase of the project should take four months to complete with the Misericordia re-development project creating approximately 445 jobs during the construction phase.

“Hundreds of skilled tradespeople and professionals in Alberta will be key to building a top-quality emergency department. Following the demolition phase, we’ll bring in the big equipment and construction activities will start this summer running through to late 2022. We know that building the vital public infrastructure, on which Albertans rely, is key to attracting investment and ensuring our province remains on the road to economic recovery”

Prasad Panda, Minister of Infrastructure

“This is an exciting next step towards a bigger, better and more modern hospital emergency department for west Edmonton. I know it’s been a long wait for residents and staff, but our government is committed to this vital project at the Misericordia Hospital that will provide a better environment to serve more patients and families.”

Tyler Shandro, Minister of Health

When completed the emergency department expansion will include space for six ambulance bays, emergency waiting and treatment areas and diagnostic services.

“With the increased emergency department capacity, Covenant Health and the Misericordia will be better equipped to provide high- quality, compassionate care to our patients and to serve as an important partner in Alberta’s health care system. The new ED is critical to meeting the health care needs of our communities.”

Patrick Dumelie, Chief Executive Officer, Covenant Health

The chapel, west annex and the Family Medicine Centre (the centre was relocated to the Cabrini Centre) will be taken down to make room for the emergency room expansion.

All phases of construction are closely co-ordinated with hospital staff to ensure public safety and to minimize impact on patients, staff and visitors.

The new emergency department will accommodate 60,000 patient visits per year.

The existing emergency department will stay open until the expanded emergency department is operational.
