Demolition in full swing to build new emergency department

The demolition and remediation phase of the project should take four months to complete with the Misericordia re-development project creating approximately 445 jobs during the construction phase.

When completed the emergency department expansion will include space for six ambulance bays, emergency waiting and treatment areas and diagnostic services.

The new ED is critical to meeting the health care needs of our communities.”

The chapel, west annex and the Family Medicine Centre (the centre was relocated to the Cabrini Centre) will be taken down to make room for the emergency room expansion.

All phases of construction are closely co-ordinated with hospital staff to ensure public safety and to minimize impact on patients, staff and visitors. 

The new emergency department will accommodate 60,000 patient visits per year.

The existing emergency department will stay open until the expanded emergency department is operational.
