The July 2019 trade mission, led by Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF) had two objectives. It profiled Alberta as a premium supplier of natural and healthy foods and ingredients for babies, children and expectant mothers. It aimed to diversify opportunities for new Alberta products in China considering current trade tension and access issues for both canola and meat products.
The program included a promotion seminar in Taipei, Taiwan to promote Alberta natural and specialty food and ingredients for children, baby and expectant mothers. It also included a market briefing session, local baby and children store tours, and meetings with key importers arranged in collaboration with Alberta’s Taiwan Office.
Along with the program in Taiwan, AF partnered with the Alberta Beijing Office to coordinate Alberta’s first ever presence at the Children, Baby and Maternity Expo (CBME) in Shanghai.
The CBME show featured a variety of products including food and ingredients, baby formula, nutraceuticals, clothing, toys, bedding, accessories, baby strollers, products for new mothers and more. It is by far the largest show in the world focusing on this segment of consumers. This was the 19th year of CBME, and the expo featured 3,300 exhibitors representing 4,700 brands, with by over 100,000 buyers, retailers and consumers attending.
“The four Alberta companies participating reported that they obtained 547 new trade contacts during the mission that will lead to future sales,” said Rachel Luo, senior trade and relations officer with the International Market Development section of AF.
“Alberta exhibitors expressed their interest in participating in future editions of this show since it offered a unique channel targeting a very specific consumer group. This will also create an opportunity to combine Alberta food suppliers with suppliers of baby care and accessory products to enlarge Alberta’s presence in the future,” she added.
The next CBME takes place July 15 to 17, 2020.
