Beef Cow-Calf Manual

This 4th edition of the Beef Cow-Calf Manual has been revised and expanded from 1989 edition to keep pace with recent information and technological advances. This manual sets out the basic principles of beef management, including information about genetics, economics, calf management, nutrition and feeding, animal health, cattle pests, handling facilities and fencing and herd management.

Management Strategies for Cattle During Dry Conditions

During dry conditions, the objective for cattle producers is to “buy feeding days” of forages and/or grazing while maintaining a reasonable level of productivity. Budget projections will involve maintaining all, some or none of the core productive asset base: the cow herd. Similar approaches are applicable to feeder cattle operations.

Sarcoptic Mange in Cattle

Sarcoptic mange, or barn itch, is a disease caused by the parasitic mite, Sarcoptes scabiei. Mange produced by this mite can be severe because the mite burrows deeply into the skin, causing intense itching. Cattle affected by sarcoptic mange lose grazing time and do not gain weight as rapidly as do uninfected cattle.

Bloat in Cattle

This publication provides information on the causes, control and treatment of bloat in cattle and is intended for livestock producers, veterinarians, and agrologists. The authors have observed bloat produced under experimental conditions by feeding fresh alfalfa and bloat-causing feedlot diets. Bloat has also been observed under grazing conditions on alfalfa pastures. Although the information in this publication is oriented around livestock production in western Canada, the general principles are widely applicable, and the publication should provide valuable information for other regions. Bloat is a complex disease that is difficult to predict under field conditions. As a result, field observations have led to varied and conflicting theories about its causes. This publication presents well-established facts and consistent field observations based on collective experience. Recommendations are made on this basis and on research reports, general observations and on the experience of cattle producers.
