At approximately 11:20 a.m., police dispatched two officers to the site of a reported vehicle theft, in the area of 119 Street and 132 Avenue. While police were interviewing the complainant at a nearby location, a 28-year-old man returned to the area with the allegedly stolen vehicle. The man exited the vehicle and fled while the officers pursued him on foot.

A short time later, the man was located seated inside a parked black Jeep, which had also been reported stolen. A confrontation occurred between the officers and the man, at which time the vehicle was put into motion. During these events, one of the officers discharged their service pistol.  The man then exited the vehicle and was arrested by police and taken into custody. There were no injuries to civilians or police.

ASIRT’s investigation will focus on the actions of police during this incident, while Edmonton Police Service will maintain responsibility for the investigation into the initial complaint and the man’s subsequent actions. ASIRT investigators are asking anyone who witnessed this incident or may have photos or video to call ASIRT at 780-644-1483.

As ASIRT’s investigation is underway, no further information will be released at this time.

ASIRT’s mandate is to effectively, independently and objectively investigate incidents involving Alberta’s police that have resulted in serious injury or death to any person. For the purposes of this mandate, this includes officer-involved shootings that would likely have resulted in serious injury or death if anyone was struck.
