On that day at approximately 4:10 a.m., a marked Edmonton Police Service (EPS) vehicle was on patrol northeast of the city when officers observed a possible break and enter in progress at a gas station at 24400 Highway 37. A Dodge truck was backed up to the gas station and the door to the building was damaged.

When officers arrived, the individuals inside the gas station ran back to the Dodge truck and tried to leave the scene. Contact was made between the truck and the EPS vehicle, and at this point EPS members fired their service pistols. A pursuit ensued southbound on Highway 28, and the truck entered the ditch near a residential area. One occupant of the truck fled on foot. The truck was able to exit the ditch, and again contact occurred between the two vehicles. EPS members again discharged their service pistols. The truck fled again, eventually stopping due to a collision with a tree. At this point, the remaining three occupants of the truck were arrested without further incident. The individual who fled on foot was apprehended separately.

A 37-year-old man who had been a passenger in the truck sustained two gunshot wounds to the leg, which resulted in non-life-threatening injuries. Police provided medical care to the man until the arrival of Emergency Medical Services. Upon the arrival of EMS, the man was treated and transported to hospital, where he was treated and released into the custody of EPS. No one else was injured during the course of this incident.

ASIRT’s investigation will focus on the actions of police during this incident, while EPS will maintain responsibility for the investigation into any offences that may have been committed by the four individuals apprehended by police. As the investigation is underway, no further information will be released at this time.

ASIRT’s mandate is to effectively, independently and objectively investigate incidents involving Alberta’s police that have resulted in serious injury or death to any person, as well as serious or sensitive allegations of police misconduct.
