“At sunset, Albertans of the Jewish faith will gather to celebrate Sukkot. This holiday was once an agricultural festival to give thanks for a successful harvest, but is now a time for Jewish people around the world to share meals, joy and faith.

“Sukkot or ‘small huts’ are built to commemorate the shelters in which the Israelites lived while they wandered the desert for 40 years after leaving Egypt. Family, friends, neighbours and strangers will gather in these sukkot to share meals and prayers.

“By learning more about diverse traditions and faiths, we build understanding and respect within our communities. When we celebrate our diversity, we create a welcoming province for all.

“Wishing a happy holiday to all who celebrate. Chag Sukkot Sameach!”
