“On this day in 1947, after 90 years of determination and activism, India achieved its independence and became the largest democracy on the planet.

“An ancient land and a young country, India combines tradition and innovation in business, education and development. Alberta is richer for the cultural, social and economic strengths that 175,000 Albertans of Indian heritage share with all of us.

“I was delighted to visit India last year at the invitation of Prime Minister Sri Narendra Modi Ji, to renew my deep ties with the leadership of India. I hope to do so again as Alberta’s Premier, to strengthen commercial and cultural ties between Alberta and India.

“I am proud to join you in celebrating India’s Independence Day. This is an opportunity for all Albertans to thank our friends, neighbours and colleagues of Indian heritage for being such an important part of our province.”
