“Today, Alberta’s Sikh community and Sikhs around the world will celebrate Gurpurab, the 549th anniversary of the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Sikh Guru and founder of Sikhism.

“Guru Nanak’s universal message of unity, inclusivity, social justice and equality for all is carried out on a daily basis by followers of the Sikh faith.

“Our government draws inspiration from these values and shares them.

“Sikh Albertans have a long and prosperous history in Alberta. Sikhs have made Alberta home even before it was a province. Sikh Albertans have made many important contributions to our province’s social, economic and cultural fabric. That is why I am so proud our government recognized April as Sikh Heritage Month.

“Gurpurab is a time for prayer and reflection. A day to celebrate the teachings of the Sikh faith and the many blessings that this faith brings to Sikh families and our society as a whole.

“I encourage all Albertans to venture out to their local Sikh Temple, Gurdwara, and learn more about the open kitchen and faith Guru Nanak started.

“On behalf of the Government of Alberta, I wish all those celebrating the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, a happy Gurpurab.”
