“Tonight at sundown, the women, men and families of Alberta’s Jewish community will light the first candle of the menorah, to welcome Hanukkah.

“Hanukkah commemorates the perseverance of the Jewish people during the Seleucid occupation of Judea in the second century BCE. While the events that inspired Hanukkah occurred long ago, its message is one that endures. Still today, in too many parts of the world, people are shunned, persecuted and even murdered for their religious beliefs and practices.

“Whatever our traditions, let us ensure that Alberta and Canada remain brilliant points of welcoming light for people of all faiths. Like the menorah, let us glow with the undying spirit of hope.”
