Alberta's Involvement in the Games

The global spotlight shines on Vancouver, but the glow reaches across our country. Alberta is capitalizing on opportunities to invest in our future, while celebrating excellence in sport, culture and the arts.

Vancouver 2010 Torch Relays

Grande Prairie awaiting the flame on November 6th and at the Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump on January 18th.

On October 22, 2009, the Olympic Flame began its journey to Canada from Athens, Greece; marking the start of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay. Truly embodying the spirit of ‘Canada’s Games’, the flame traveled 45,000 km from coast-to-coast-to-coast by land, sea and air for 106 days - making this the longest torch relay ever to take place within a single country.

On November 6 in the north, and January 13-21 in the south, the Olympic Flame brought its glow to 76 of Alberta’s cities, towns and Aboriginal communities, including Edmonton, our capital, and Calgary, host of the 1988 Olympic Winter Games. The flame also made a triumphant return to all ‘88 venues – Canada Olympic Park, the Olympic Oval, the Olympic Saddledome and Nakiska – in a salute to their important role in the history and tradition of the Games.

Thousands of Albertans shared in the experience by lining the relay route to cheer on our 1,000 torchbearers, and attending one of the 18 formal community celebrations.

The Paralympic Torch Relay captured the spirit of those who have defied the odds as it makes the 10-day journey from our nations’ capital on March 3 to the Opening Ceremony in Vancouver March 12.
