The Olympic Movement

The goal of the Olympic Movement is to promote and contribute to the practice of sport in a "spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play."  The spirit of fair play includes observing the rules of play and competition, respecting opponents and combating violence and unfair behaviour.

For athletes to participate in the Olympic Games, they must respect and live up to the ideals of fair play.  They must also:

  • Not use any banned substances or procedures
  • Respect and follow the Olympics’ anti-doping code
  • Be a national (citizen) of the country for which they are competing

What is the Olympic Family?

The groups within the Olympic Family that agree to be guided by the Olympic Charter and recognize the authority of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) are referred to as the Olympic Movement.

Quick Fact

O Sport, you are Peace!  You promote happy relations between peoples, bringing them together in their shared devotion to a strength, which is controlled, organized and self-disciplined.  From you, the young worldwide learn self-respect, and thus the diversity of national qualities becomes the source of a generous and friendly rivalry.

—Verse IX of Ode to Sport by Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympics
