Alberta's Involvement in the Games
The global spotlight shines on Vancouver, but the glow reaches across our country. Alberta is capitalizing on opportunities to invest in our future, while celebrating excellence in sport, culture and the arts.
Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad
Arts and culture are an important part of Canada’s cultural identity and strength.
Entertaining, engaging and exciting, the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad was a three-year event that showcased the astonishing level of talent and accomplishment in Canada’s performing arts scene; and featured an array of talented Alberta artists in literature, music, dance, theatre and visual arts events that ranged from traditional to avant-garde.
Over 60 Alberta artists stepped into the spotlight throughout the Cultural Olympiad including Teagan and Sara, Springboard Dance, Asani and Ronnie Burkett in 2009. In 2010, Alberta Ballet performed Joni Mitchell's The Fiddle and the Drum. Edmonton's Catalyst Theatre performed the Edgar Allan Poe-inspired Nevermore. And Theatre Calgary presented the world premiere of Beyond Eden, a new rock musical spectacle written by Bruce Ruddell.
Several Alberta artists also participated in the Art of Craft exhibit at the Museum of Vancouver between February 14 to April 11, 2010; including the First Nations / Second Nature visual art exhibit at the Audain Gallery and the Traditional Alberta display at the Aboriginal Artisan Village at Vancouver Community College
Alberta video artists also saw their work displayed on the CUE outdoor LED exhibition screen at the Vancouver Art Gallery, Robson Street façade throughout the Olympics. For more detailed information on the Cultural Olympiad visit www.vancouver2010.com/culturalolympiad.
