Reliving the Glory of the Gold Medal Game
It had been cloudy and drizzly in Vancouver for several days. But in the end, when the entire nation was watching—including hundreds of proud Canadians and international hockey fans crowding Alberta Plaza and its sidewalks—the sun did indeed shine. Especially on Team Canada, when gold was captured.
Like sidewalks around the country where TVs are displayed in shop windows, the crowd at the Plaza was cheering, chanting, hollering and singing. Then silence, courtesy of a tying goal by Team USA. How was this possible?
As everyone knows by now, Team Canada did emerge the victor. 3-2 in overtime. And then the celebrations began.
Truth be told, the final score was predicted by The Be Arthurs, or to be accurate, two of the trio. The acoustic/folk/tropical band from Edmonton was slated to perform at the plaza, following the big game. Early in the game, trio members Bob and Sheldon called it at 3-2.
But when the tying goal was scored, there was some apprehension, as their band included a ukulele…and that might not be what the doctor ordered if Team Canada had lost.
