Olympic Legacy Network

In June 2010, Minister Cindy Ady met with representatives from British Columbia, the Utah Sports Commission, Utah Olympic Park and the Utah Athletic Foundation to explore opportunities for a North American Legacy Network.

Building on the Legacy MOU signed with British Columbia in 2009, the Network could generate new opportunities to build a North American circuit for international competitions, host sport festivals as well as improve sharing of venue and event management practices and volunteer training.

Travel Alberta

Travel Alberta created a strategic, personalized and distinct platform for Alberta’s tourism industry to conduct business, build relationships and to tell Alberta’s tourism story during the Olympics, primarily focused around the Alberta Train.

While it will take months to track and evaluate complete results of Travel Alberta’s marketing initiatives leading up to, during, and following the Olympic Games, there is no question that the strategy has been an unqualified success and a comprehensive post-games strategy is underway to follow up on future business and media exposure for Alberta.

“What an inspiring initiative by a valued partner,” says Michele McKenzie, President and CEO of the Canadian Tourism Commission, recognized by Marketing Magazine as Marketer of the Year. “I applaud Travel Alberta’s ingenuity in making a unique contribution to our collective success during the Games. The train was absolutely key for us to give media a dependable and enjoyable way to travel to and from Whistler -- and to give them one more reason to entice their audiences to travel in Canada.”

The Anaheim Ducks, Travel Alberta’s largest non-traditional partner in Orange County, California, confirmed on the Alberta Train that their annual sponsors meeting will be held outside of the U.S. for the first time this summer, in Alberta’s Rocky Mountains.

During their visit to Vancouver during the Games, Mexicana Airlines offered to provide increased marketing support to Travel Alberta and Alberta industry partners.

Travel Alberta’s platform during the games provided a conduit for industry to strengthen relationships amongst themselves and to identify further opportunities to partner when bidding on meetings, conventions, incentive travel and tour (MCIT) business.

“…We have four corporate buyers from Spain coming to Lake Louise in April to look at bringing their incentive meetings to Alberta…All that business from just one meeting! And from a market we need to grow in…” - Sandy Best, Lake Louise Ski Area

Growing Opportunities in Alberta

Alberta's Agriculture

The world experienced a true taste of Alberta during the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games as food products from around the province were showcased at Alberta House, Alberta Plaza and on the Alberta Train.

Developed specifically for the 2010 venues, the 'Taste of Alberta" menu represented the different growing regions of the province. Items included popular dishes like Cowboy Trail Chili, Prairie Chowder and others featuring Alberta beef, pork and bison.  A selection of menu items also received the seal of approval from the Fuel for Gold program. Supported by Alberta beef, turkey, egg and pork producers, Fuel for Gold ensures that developing athletes registered at the Canadian Sport Centre-Calgary have access to a nutritious subsidized daily lunch program

Significant media interest in the menu and products resulted in a food tasting event at Alberta Plaza attended by food writers.

At least 20 Alberta companies supplied more than 10,000 kg of Alberta food products. Five new products were developed by Alberta food processors for the menu and the companies are now marketing these new products widely.

The 2010 Games exposed Alberta food products to the food and beverage industry in BC, opening new opportunities for Alberta food companies.  Four multi-chain restaurants have expressed interest in learning more about sourcing Alberta food products.

Advanced Education & Technology

The presence of sponsors, business leaders and organizations gathered at the Olympic Games allowed representatives from Alberta Advanced Education and Technology to arrange multiple meetings that otherwise would have required multiple trips.  The meetings covered a range of industry sectors, from e-learning to life sciences investment opportunities, food products and electronics.  Follow-up discussions are underway.

Expanding Franco Alberta’s tourism industry

Vancouver 2010 presented a prime opportunity to further promote Alberta’s francophone tourism industry.  Marc Tremblay, Executive Director of Le Conseil de developpement economique de’lAlberta, opened doors in Vancouver to show the world Alberta’s thriving and vibrant French community.  Blog: Alberta Doing Business in Vancouver

Alberta Fashion on the Red Carpet

Riding the Alberta Train generated several opportunities for Calgary-based fashion icon Paul Hardy, including a preview of pieces from his new collection at Alberta House with supermodel Heather Marx and actor Paul Greene.

Paul met former athlete and ET Canada host, Rosey Edeh, on the train and agreed to design her gown for the 2010 Academy Awards. After the Oscars, Rosey will donate it to a fundraising auction for a development project in Africa

Paul also met with Jean Grand-Maitre, the visionary Alberta Ballet and Vancouver 2010 Ceremonies choreographer, and agreed to design costumes for the 2011 world premiere of Alberta Ballet’s new production to be set to Sarah McLachlan’s music. Paul will also be design Sarah's dress for the debut night.

Finally, a meeting with skeleton Olympic gold-medallist Jon Montgomery and his girlfriend, Darla, led to an agreement for Paul to dress them for the Junos. Jon also modelled items from Paul’s menswear collection at Alberta House.
