As the next step in the process to build a new continuing care facility and lodge, Alberta Health Services (AHS) and the Newell Foundation are signing a 32-year lease agreement for vacant land owned by AHS.

The Newell Foundation is receiving an Affordable Supportive Living Initiative grant of $3.4 million from the Ministry of Health to build the long-term care and dementia spaces. The Ministry of Seniors and Housing and the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation are jointly investing $9.6 million for the lodge units through the Investment in Affordable Housing agreement.

“We took the time to do a thorough review of all proposed Affordable Supportive Living Initiative projects to make sure they were best suited to what communities need. I’m pleased the people of Bassano and area will benefit from new spaces, the higher level of care and the collaborative process leading up to this lease agreement.”

Sarah Hoffman, Minister of Health

“Every Albertan deserves a safe and affordable place to call home. The new lodge spaces give seniors affordable living and care options so they can age in community close to family, friends and neighbours.”

Lori Sigurdson, Minister of Seniors and Housing

“We would like to thank Minister Hoffman for approving the land lease. We look forward to working together on the Bassano project.”

Barry Morishita, Newell Foundation Board Chairman

“This new continuing care facility will address the varied needs of residents of Bassano and surrounding communities. We are pleased to have forged a strong working relationship with the Newell Foundation on this project and in developing this facility,”

Dr. Verna Yiu, President and CEO of Alberta Health Services
