The $3 million investment is in addition to a philanthropic contribution from RESOLVE, a Calgary fundraising group that supports building affordable and supported housing for vulnerable Albertans. The provincial investment is part of more than $1 billion allocated for affordable housing capital projects over the next five years.

Construction is expected to begin soon in Calgary’s industrial Manchester neighbourhood on the new permanent home of Bedford House. Once complete, the facility will offer 32-units with on-site supports.

“Everyone deserves a safe place to live with access to the supports they need to thrive in their community. Bedford House has a long history of success in helping men rebuild their lives, and our government is pleased to support their work.”

Irfan Sabir, Minister of Human Services

“I’d like to thank the Alberta Government for recognizing the importance of the work done by the Calgary John Howard Society and Bedford House. Providing support and transitional housing to individuals being released into the community increases their likelihood of success and can break the cycle of poverty, homelessness and crime.”

Marjorie Hunchak, Board Chair, Calgary John Howard Society

“Bedford House supports our communities by reducing recidivism rates, crime, social disorder and victimization. Through housing, supportive programming, and structured guidance, Bedford House enhances the safety and security of our communities while meeting the needs of those transitioning from Federal Institutions back into the community.”

Trevor Daroux, Deputy Chief, Calgary Police Service

Bedford House is operated by the Calgary John Howard Society, a community-based charitable organization dedicated to reducing crime and making communities safer through preventative and restorative justice practices.
