This release was issued under a previous government.

The consultation will run until July 6, 2016, as part of ongoing work to support the safety and dignity of persons with developmental disabilities.

Albertans can visit humanservices.alberta.ca/pddconsultation to fill out a questionnaire and participate in an interactive webinar on June 20 and 27. The Consultation Team will use the public’s input to prepare a final report and recommendations for Government’s consideration.

“Everyone deserves to live safely and with the opportunity to thrive at home and in their community. Our government is committed to listening to the disability community on the issues that affect their daily lives, and I look forward to receiving the Consultation Team’s recommendations on how we can best ensure the safety of persons with developmental disabilities.”

Irfan Sabir, Minister of Human Services

“I am proud that our team is continuing our important work and engaging with persons with developmental disabilities on exploring solutions that will respect their dignity while enabling them to live safely. I look forward to hearing from individuals, families and advocates about what solutions can support their safety and well-being.”

John te Linde, PDD Consultation Team Chair

The Consultation Team’s proposed safety ideas involve:

  • Reviewing the PDD program to enable safer lives in community for individuals with developmental disabilities;
  • Training and educating staff working with individuals with developmental disabilities;
  • Setting accreditation standards for community service providers;
  • Interpreting Alberta safety codes.

The Consultation Team developed their proposed ideas after consulting with Albertans on the PDD Safety Standards Regulation in February and March. The Minister of Human Services repealed the regulation on April 1, 2016, based on recommendations from the Consultation Team’s Phase 1 Report.
