Public members on post-secondary boards play an essential role in providing leadership and representing the interests of Albertans. The Chair represents the Board of Governors to the Minister of Advanced Education. Post-secondary boards are responsible for guiding the future of the institution and are accountable for ensuring public funds are used effectively and appropriately.

Michael Phair, Chair of the University of Alberta Board of Governors

Phair is the Executive Director of the North Saskatchewan River Valley Conservation Society. From 1992 to 2007, he was an elected member of Edmonton’s city council representing central Edmonton. Phair has been an instructor at Grant MacEwan University, Mount Royal University, as well as the University of Alberta, and he is currently an adjunct professor with the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Education. 

The Chair of the Board of Governors of the University of Alberta is appointed for a term of up to three years and may be eligible for reappointment to a maximum of 10 consecutive years. No honorarium is paid as part of the position. The Chair and board members are reimbursed for allowable expenses as per the board’s bylaws.
