Kurelek from the Community: An autobiography through his art and writings is a feature exhibit presented in the visitor reception centre from May 19 to September 3. The exhibit highlights the Albertan roots of one of Canada’s best-known prairie artists, William (Vasyl) Kurelek, through a selection of his paintings, drawings and reproduction prints on loan from community partners and private collections. The exhibit is co-sponsored by Kalyna Country Ecomuseum, the Ukrainian Pioneers’ Association of Alberta and the Edmonton Journal.

The day also offers one of Alberta’s largest Ukrainian dance extravaganzas featuring a variety of dance groups from Ardrossan, Edmonton, Grande Prairie, Red Deer, and Vegreville.

Throughout the day costumed role players will welcome the new spring season with authentic sights and celebrations in the historical village. Other activities include a village market, musical entertainment, horse-drawn wagon rides, sheep shearing, church services and a quilt display hosted by the Kalyna Country Quilters Guild. Visitors can reward their taste buds with traditional Ukrainian food.

Admission to the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village is $9 for adults, $20 for a family (two adults and their children ages 7 to 17), $7 for seniors and $4 for youth (ages 7 to 17). Children six and under are admitted free. Admission is also free for those with a current Experience Alberta’s History Pass or Friends of the Ukrainian Village Society membership card. Visitors are encouraged to bring a lawn chair for seating.

Operated by Alberta Culture, the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village is located 25 minutes east of Edmonton on Highway 16. It is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through to September 3.
