Overview
The Primary Care Innovation Fund (PCIF) supports innovative projects that improve outcomes, care experiences and system efficiency in Alberta’s health system. The program funds innovations that strengthen primary care, advance health equity and support prevention and early intervention.
PCIF supports the demonstration, validation, and scaling of innovations that can be adopted across diverse primary care settings, including urban, rural, remote and Indigenous communities.
Streams
Funding is available through 2 streams:
Primary Care Innovation
- Increase patient attachment and improve access to and continuity of primary care.
- Reduce administrative burden on providers and teams.
- Strengthen team-based models of care.
- Improve transitions and continuity of care.
- Support innovations ready for demonstration, validation, or scale.
Health Equity and Prevention
- Improve access and outcomes for underserved populations.
- Support prevention and early intervention.
- Advance culturally safe and community-informed care.
- Address unmet needs and reduce avoidable demand on downstream health services.
- Generate evidence to support broader adoption of equitable and preventative care models.
Funding
A total of $10 million is available through the program, with $5 million allocated to each funding stream. Projects may receive funding for up to 2 years.

Eligibility
Eligible applicants include:
- Primary Care Networks and Regional Primary Care Networks
- provincially funded health system organizations (for example, Alberta Health Services)
- provincially recognized post-secondary institutions
- federally or provincially incorporated non-profit and not-for-profit organizations, including community-based organizations and health foundations
- Indigenous governments, organizations and representative bodies
- Alberta for-profit corporations applying in partnership with an eligible health system organization
- municipalities
How to apply
Step 1. Read the guidelines
- Review the PCIF 2026/27 Program Guide.
Step 2. Complete the online application
- Fill out the PCIF 2026/27 Application Form.
- The application is completed and submitted through the online form.
- To avoid losing your work, we recommend drafting the application in a separate document before entering information into the application form.
- To save your progress and continue later, click Save and enter your email address. You will receive an email from [email protected] containing a link to return to your application and information about the link’s expiration date.
Step 3. Submit the application
- Click the Submit button at the bottom-right corner of the last page of the application.
- When prompted, enter your email address in the pop-up window and click Submit to send your application.
- You will receive a copy of your submitted application and an email from [email protected] with instructions for forwarding the required supporting documentation as email attachments to [email protected].
- You will also receive an automated notification confirming that your application has been received.
After you apply
- Initial screening
Applications are screened for completeness and eligibility. - Review and scoring
Applications that pass initial screening undergo a multi-stage review. Applications are assessed based on alignment with program objectives, potential impact, feasibility and readiness, evaluation measures, sustainability and scalability. - Internal review and funding decisions
Applications recommended through the review process are considered against program priorities, provincial needs, available funding and the overall strength of the application. - Decision notification
All applicants will receive formal notice of the funding decision. - Final grant agreements
Shortlisted applicants will be contacted for further discussion or refinement of their proposal before final grant agreements are completed.
