This informational clinic provides employers with hands-on support with completing the Alberta.ca Account for Organizations registration required for the CAPG. We will: 

• walk you through the process
• answer your questions in real time
• help you prepare for the next steps in your CAPG application

Funding can support instructor-led training in the following skills categories: 

• Business process and operations management
• Digital and technological skills
• Technical skills

The CAPG is available for direct training costs only, including:

• examination fees
• tuition or course fees charged by the training provider
• textbooks or software

Small and medium-sized organizations may be eligible for travel costs related to training.

Note: Employee wages and general business assets are not eligible.

Employers must be one of the following eligible types:

• For-profit, private sector businesses, including incorporated and unincorporated businesses and partnerships
• Non-profit organizations
• First Nations and Métis Settlements 
• The following Crown corporations located in a rural Alberta community:
  • Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC)
  • ATB Financial

Registered employers must also:

• be operational in Alberta for at least one year
• have an active legal entity status throughout the grant term 
• be in good standing
• carry Workers Compensation Benefits coverage for trainees
• comply with provincial agreements

The following employers are not eligible to participate in the CAPG program:

• Businesses or organizations that are not incorporated or registered
• Federal, provincial or municipal governments 
• Holding companies whose primary purpose is ownership of assets rather than active business operations 
• Political parties 
• Provincial or federal crown corporations not listed under eligible applicants 
• Public post-secondary institutions, schools, school boards and any school and authority listed on Alberta Education’s Schools and Authorities index 
• Public sector or publicly funded organizations such as hospitals and health authorities

Trainees must be employees (current or prospective) that fall under one of the following eligible types:

• Employed
• Individuals who have accepted or received an offer of employment from the applicant employer and are expected to be employed upon completion of training.
• Employed family members
• Business owners

In addition, CAPG trainees must:

• live in Alberta
• be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or protected people under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada) who are entitled to work in Canada

Note:

• Employers must maintain an employment or prospective employment relationship with all trainees. 
• Trainee employment may be verified at any time during the application process.

Trainees receiving Employment Insurance

Employers must declare on the CAPG application if their trainee is receiving Employment Insurance (EI) benefits.
A trainee receiving EI benefits must notify their EI case worker of the training as soon as possible, to ensure they continue to receive their benefits.

The following individuals are ineligible:

• Board members
• Individuals who will not be employed by the applicant employer upon completion of  training
• Individuals who do not have a paid employer-employee relationship with the employer applicant (example: contractors and volunteers) unless trainees are business owners
• Unemployed family members
• Individuals working in Canada temporarily or who have temporary status (except where identified), such as temporary foreign workers

Training providers or instructors compensated by employers using CAPG funding must:

• be third-party
• meet certain qualification requirements 
• be well-established

The following training providers or instructors are ineligible as they are not considered third-party:

• Employer applicants
• Relatives of the employer applicant
• Employees of the employer applicant
• Training providers and franchisers exclusive to one employee

Training must be directly related to the trainees’ current or future job and fall within at least one of the following skills categories:

• Business Process and Operations Management: Improving processes, systems, operations, and resource management
• Technical: Specialized skills that enhance efficiency, quality, and problem solving
• Digital and Technological: Skills to use, manage, and integrate digital tools and technologies

Training must also:

• be relevant to the trainee’s job
• be completed within 52 weeks
• include interaction with a qualified instructor
• be instructional and structured
• take place in Alberta, except under exceptional circumstances

Training programs or courses ineligible for CAPG funding include: 

• training not specific to business process and operations management, technical or digital and technological skills
• training that contributes towards a diploma, degree, master’s or doctoral program where the primary purpose is to obtain or advance toward an academic credential, rather than to address an immediate workplace training need
• academic preparatory courses and academic entrance examinations required for admission, entry or eligibility for a post-secondary program
• Class 1 Learning pathway, previously known as MELT
• apprenticeship training
• conference
• consultant services

Employers will need an Alberta.ca Account for Organizations to access this program. Staff members that require access to the CAPG Portal need their own staff (user) account joined to the Organization Account. See instructions for inviting individuals or joining an organization.

Account holders note:

• Passwords for accounts must not be shared.
• Accounts must not be overwritten or re-used.

Additional contacts

Additional contacts must first be invited directly through Alberta.ca Account for Organizations. Then, the new user must:

• log in to the CAPG Portal to register with our grant system
• email CAPG to transfer any grants (if needed)

Note: Trainees do not require an Alberta.ca Account.
