Brooks-Lim has been serving as interim acting chief medical examiner since July 2016. Her permanent appointment at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) follows an open competition to fill the position.
Brooks-Lim has a long-standing career in forensic pathology spanning Canada and the United Kingdom. Originally from the U.K., she earned her medical degree at the University of Bristol and completed her postgraduate medical training in pathology and forensic pathology in Leicester, Glasgow and Dundee. She earned postgraduate and professional certifications from Stanford University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Cornell University.

- Deputy chief medical examiner in Edmonton
- Assistant chief medical examiner in Calgary and Edmonton
- Forensic pathologist and coroner in Saskatchewan
- Home Office accredited forensic pathologist in England
- Clinical lecturer in forensic medicine and pathology in Scotland

The OCME provides an essential service in the criminal justice system. When a death occurs suddenly or cannot be explained, the OCME conducts an investigation, often acting as the first point of contact for the deceased’s grieving relatives and friends and the deceased’s physician.
The chief medical examiner is appointed under Alberta’s Fatality Inquiries Act by the Lieutenant Governor in Council upon recommendation of the Minister of Justice and Solicitor General.
The appointment takes effect on Feb. 1, 2017.
