As part of National Child Abuse Prevention Month, the Government of Alberta is reinforcing its commitment to work with community partners to support children and families.

Human Services is extending $166,000 in grant funding through the Family and Community Safety Program to Further Education Society in Calgary. Its project, “New Beginnings: A Parenting After Violence Community Initiative,” is designed to strengthen the work of shelters and other community agencies helping children and families in Calgary. So far, the program has supported 231 parents and 247 children.

“Every time a child experiences abuse is a tragedy, and we all have a responsibility to prevent abuse and ensure that survivors and those who love them have the supports they need to heal. Our government is proud to partner with the Further Education Society in their critical work of preventing abuse and supporting survivors.”

Irfan Sabir, Minister of Human Services

“Further Education Society is thrilled to receive additional funding to continue our important work with vulnerable families who have experienced violence and abuse and the community agencies that assist them. Together we can help families plan for a brighter future.”

Elaine Cairns, Executive Director, Further Education Society

“Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters wholeheartedly supports the New Beginnings project and believes it will improve services for women and children fleeing domestic abuse. We are proud to be a partner in this initiative.”

Carolyn Goard, Director of Member Programs and Services, Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters
