“The Labour Day long weekend provides an important opportunity for Albertans to celebrate the long history of advocacy and hard work that has helped shape our province’s modern workplaces. It’s also a chance to recognize the dignity of work and restate our commitment to safe and healthy workplaces.

“The workplace rights we all enjoy today have been put in place thanks to the sacrifice of those who have gone before us. In 1907, an estimated 2,000 Albertans marched down Stephen Avenue in Calgary on Labour Day to promote fairness and dignity in work before finishing up the day with sports and family entertainment in Victoria Park.

“Today’s celebrations across Alberta carry that same spirit of pride and determination, mixed with our enjoyment of leisure and recreation. It’s a reminder of the importance work carries in our daily lives. In addition to allowing us to earn a living and support our families, our work provides us with opportunities for learning and leadership as well as teamwork and a sense of community.

“It’s also important to remember the crucial role Alberta workers and unions have played to champion the safe, fair and productive work environments that contribute to the success of our society and economy. All Albertans deserve to work in a safe and healthy environment and we all have a role in ensuring we each get home safe at the end of the day.

“By working together, we can ensure that Alberta continues to be one of the best places to live, work, study and raise a family. On behalf of the Government of Alberta, I want to thank all Albertans for your hard work and wish you a safe and leisurely Labour Day.”
