This release was issued under a previous government.

Effective at 4 p.m. today, the fire ban and OHV restrictions will no longer be in effect for much of the province. They will remain in effect for the Lac La Biche and Fort McMurray Forest Areas of northeastern Alberta, however.

In the parts of Alberta’s Forest Protection Area where the fire ban is still in effect, portable propane fire pits and gas or propane stoves and barbecues designed for cooking or heating are allowed. All open fires are still prohibited. All fire permits have been suspended in those areas and no new permits will be issued until further notice.

Cities, towns, villages or summer villages may still have fire bans, restrictions or advisories in place. Municipalities that originally fell under the provincewide fire ban may choose to enact their own fire bans, restrictions or advisories.

Even though conditions have improved, it is still important for Albertans to do their part to prevent wildfires. Fully extinguish campfires. Soak the ashes, stir them and then soak them again. If you’re riding an OHV, stop frequently and check for debris in such areas as the exhaust and under the seat. Debris in OHV hotspots can become superheated, fall to the ground and start a wildfire.

Check albertafirebans.ca for the location of fire bans, restrictions and advisories as well as for more information on what is and is not included in the ban. Check emergency.alberta.ca for more information on the OHV restriction.
