Many schools across the province are seeing an increase in their student populations. It is projected that provincial K-12 enrolment growth will be about 8,200 students - or 1.3 per cent - in the 2016-17 school year. It is estimated the funding provided for enrolment will allow boards to add 600 teachers and educational assistants to Alberta schools.

“No matter the economic difficulties facing Alberta, our government is committed to providing Alberta students with a quality education that enriches their lives and prepares them for their career in a diverse economy. Through Budget 2016, we are providing school authorities with the stable and predictable funding they have long called for.”

David Eggen, Minister of Education

Minister Eggen has been touring the province to speak with school leaders, teachers and parents about the positive impact Budget 2016 will have on classrooms in their communities.

“The Alberta School Councils’ Association has long advocated for predictable and sustainable funding for students in Alberta. ASCA is pleased that education has remained a priority for this government in Budget 2016. Funding enrolment growth provides students with the best opportunity for school success.”

Allison Pike, President, Alberta School Councils’ Association

On Friday, Minister Eggen visited Galbraith Elementary School, part of the Lethbridge School District. The school has recently renovated and re-opened its upper floor to accommodate its growing student population.

“Receiving stable funding is imperative to our efforts to provide students with the education they need to thrive in their futures. Our district continues to see significant enrolment growth and securing this funding will help us provide these students with the resources they need.”

Mich Forster, Board Chair, Lethbridge School District No. 51
